Knapp Architects conducted a cultural and historic resources survey of properties in the downtown area that appeared to have potential eligibility for the California Register of Historical Resources. Based on records provided by the Contra Costa County Assessor’s Office, the survey encompassed all properties constructed before 1959 (or 50 years old). Beginning with the collection of basic historical data, our team performed a windshield survey of resources in situ and recorded related architectural data using survey forms and photographs. Any properties without a documented construction date were visually evaluated for significance. In all, 320 properties were studied, and Knapp Architects made recommendations for additional properties that they deemed significant, including the Art Deco Park Theatre and the Old Firehouse School, a representative Art Deco/Streamline Moderne municipal building.
