Tannery Arts Center

Santa Cruz, California

Dating from the nineteenth-century, this sprawling industrial complex continued in leather production to the end of the twentieth-century before closing. The Santa Cruz Redevelopment Agency acquired the site and removed many of the buildings to accommodate a large new housing development. The agency retained the oldest tannery buildings, a highly varied collection of wood structures, and adapted it as an arts center. Our firm served as preservation consultant to architect-of-record, Mark Cavagnero Architects.
